COVID-19 has caused enormous economic turmoil around the world, with many companies freezing employment and suspending investments. Many also noticed their technological shortcomings and encountered programming challenges, such as unsecured firmware or lack of tailored solutions. Companies have noticed the need to digitize and automate work to meet new challenges. Thus, the pandemic significantly accelerated digital transformation, opening the door to low-code and no-code technologies.

Less code, less problems

The rapid digital transformation is creating a huge gap in the supply and demand of developers. Although more and more new developers are joining the industry, there are still not enough of them. Therefore, low-code and no-code platforms will gain momentum in 2021. As many as 85% of engineers predict that the use of these tools will soon become widespread (1). Low-code tools are intended for programmers, allowing them to create systems with little work. In turn, no-code platforms are dedicated to non-programmers. They enable business experts with minimal IT skills to independently build and operate relatively simple applications, data, and process integration tasks. Low-code and no-code platforms were created to simplify the delivery of technological solutions in companies. Both technologies allow you to implement necessary applications much faster and automate work. By using these tools, companies can streamline workflows and reduce workload, allowing employees to focus on other more important tasks. Low-code and no-code tools lower the barrier to entry with visual programming interfaces and drag-and-drop tools. No-code platforms like Qalcwise, allow any user to create even advanced business applications after short training. For example, an HR employee can create an application to handle leave requests, an accounting employee can create an employee expense management application, and an administration employee can create a fleet management application in just a few days. Knowing the process, they can use visual components (widgets), like LEGO bricks, to design an application to which they can transfer what they have previously done in Excel or several other programs. This is how a new group of users called "citizen developers" is born, taking over some of the IT competences. No-code allows non-technical workers to innovate and develop software on their own in weeks, not months.  

Companies prefer do-it-yourself solutions

Last year during the Ignite 2020 conference, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, admitted that companies would develop software in-house. Ten years ago, Microsoft expected to sell its solutions to companies, but today it knows it must engage in public development of enterprise software on a large scale. Gartner (2) predicts that within 3-5 years as many as 65% of solutions will be created within companies using low-code and no-code supported by AI software bots and machine learning. Citizen software enables technological changes to be introduced in companies faster and more tailored to business needs, thereby increasing their competitiveness and innovation. It also allows you to make the automation process more democratic, creative, flexible and ethical. Thanks to the involvement of business experts, they have a greater influence on the solutions being developed and what their work will look like in the future. By creating multidisciplinary teams, organizations can develop solutions that are 100% tailored to their needs, allowing for better use of internal talents and capabilities. And also better prepare teams for remote work during and after the pandemic, ensuring greater technological resistance to unexpected changes (3).
